I just love 2001. And for decades I’ve wondered how the stargate sequence was made. And recently I started reading about Douglas Trumbull, John Whitney and Robert Abel and learnt how they made it.
So there we go. I started thinking of replicating the effect with digital tools, but trying to mimic their way of doing it: camera motion, expositions, the slit size, etc… And this is what came out of it. Hope you like it.
By the way, I composed a piece of music inspired in that of Ligeti, that makes for 99% of the effect.
